2021 Ford Edge has an edge!

The Ford Edge does have an edge. And that edge is fuel economy. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine is rated at 29 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg in the city. I saw 30.2 mpg on a recent highway jaunt. I'd say that is a definite Edge!

I'm pretty sure Ford wants to be your SUV provider. Counting the Bronco and Mustang Mach-E, Ford offers seven different SUVs and Crossovers (to me they are all SUVs). The Edge is kind of in the middle, bigger than the Escape but not as big as the Explorer or Expedition.

The Edge is based on a FWD platform and is available in FWD or AWD. The test ST-Line I drove was FWD.

Two engines are available, the 2.0-liter in the test Edge or a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6. Now I would never try to talk anyone out of a more powerful engine but out here in the real world the 2.0's 250 horsepower is darn impressive. Yes the V6's 335 is more but in the daily grind the 4-cylinder is great.

I realize that it is late in the year to be reviewing a 2021 now that the 2022s are out (more or less) but I write about what is available. And if you've been by your local dealer lately you know there isn't much available.

There is ample, comfortable seating for five. It's relatively easy to get in and out of, and there's enough cargo room for a family vacation - 39.2 cubic feet of storage behind the rear seat. This expands to 73.4 cu. ft. with the rear seats folded down.

Was there a negative? Yes but it isn't a deal killer. I can't be the only person that doesn't like touch screens though. The only part I absolutely hated was the seat heater controls; they are part of the touch screen and I could not control them while driving. Between having to steady my finger to hit the right spot, taking my eyes of the road to do so, and my often Zombie fingers that do not work, many touch screen controls are only to be accessed when stationary.

You can't compare apples to oranges so comparing the 2021 Edge price to the 2022's is not fair. The 2021 has a base price of $38,440 with the 2022's is $41,735. But the '22 includes things that are either optional on the '21 or not available.

When dealers finally get some inventory take a look at the Edge.
