Monterey - The Week to Come
Next week is the start of my Monterey Car Week. There has been activity on the Peninsula this week including this weekend's PreHistorics but my week won't start until Tuesday. It's beginning to look like a full week. Here's my tentative schedule:
Early Tuesday, August 16th, I leave home early so I can get to Ocean Avenue, Carmel-by-the-Sea early. Parking is tough so the earlier the better. The Concours on the Avenue is a great show and it's free! I'll have a latte and maybe a sweet for breakfast and find a spot for maybe a salad for lunch. I like to spend some money at the local businesses. After all Ocean Avenue is closed to traffic and the town is grid-locked. I'm sure their businesses suffer some.
Later Tuesday afternoon there's the Classic Motorsports Magazine Monterey Kick-off Cruise In at Folktale Winery and it is free too. I'll drop by and take a few pics.
Wednesday looks a little easier. I'll visit Automobilia Monterey at the Embassy Suite and the Little Car Show on Lighthouse Ave., Pacific Grove. I may stop by the Carmel Mission Classic show but I didn't apply for credentials so we'll see if I can get in for some pictures.
Thursday is my day to snoop around the auctions. There are so many so I'm going to be busy. I hope to also take in at least some of the Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance.
Sometime Wednesday or Thursday I have to pick up my credentials as well.
Friday morning maybe I'll just go down to the Wharf and grab a coffee to sip on while I stare at the Bay. Then about noon back to Lighthouse Ave. for the 22nd Annual Pacific Grove Concours Auto Rally show. Friday evening it's out to the Peter Hay Golf Course for a press conference. If there's time and I'm not knackered I'll head down to Cannery Row for an Exotic Car Show (in reality the people are the show).
Saturday starts to get hectic. I have to be at Concorso Italiano early for breakfast and press conference with Fiat. That morning is also Concours d'Lemons Monterey a kind of tongue in cheek event. And to cap the day off I'll attend the Automotive Fine Arts Society's show at Pebble Beach, an event that makes me wish I had more money and more wall space.
Sunday is the anchor day, the day of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. I have a 9 am press conference for the Petersen Museum to attend so I'll try to be there early. I have a plan to beat the parking problem (legally this year) - take a cab. I'll try to find a parking spot not too far away, call a cab and hopefully get dropped off right at the Lodge.
In between all the cars I'll find time for some great food with my buddy Doug. The Monterey area has some great restaurants and they all aren't expensive. Doug's a native so he knows all the good spots.
This ought to tire me out. After a good night's sleep I'll head home Monday morning. I wish I could bring a bunch of you with me, especially if you've never been. I promise to take a ton of pictures and post them right here.
