2025 Ford Maverick XLT AWD Hybrid - Great fuel economy
I last drove a Maverick almost a year ago (https://www.brucehotchkiss.net/2024/11/2024-ford-ranger-supercrew-4x2-lariat.html and I liked it. I wasn't quite as smitten by the 2025 Hybrid version.
On the outside, it's the same Maverick; 4 doors, the bed is 54.4" long, and 42.6" wide between the wheelhouses. Ford says it seats five but I'd say four should be the max.
The Hybrid uses a 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine that, combined with the electric motor, makes 191 h.p. and 155 lb-ft of torque. Power goes out through a CVT to all four wheels.
The claim to fame for any hybrid is economy. As tested the Maverick AWD Hybrid is rated at 40-mpg city, 34-mpg highway, and combined of 37-mpg. As you can see my "combined" (of primarily highway) was 38.4-mpg.
The test Maverick XLT AWD Hybrid had the optional 4K (4,000 lb) tow package. The tow package is $745 but you also have to have the Ford Co-Pilot 360 that adds $795. Oh for the days when you could pick and choose your options ala carte.
When I first drove the 2025 Maverick XLT AWD Hybrid I thought the steering was too stiff and the suspension had little give. I got used to the steering but the ride? Nope. Many EVs and hybrids feel to me like they have no give, like they are over-loaded. I know EV batteries are heavy but the Hybrid is not much heavier than a standard Maverick so what's up?
A friend once said no pickup should have a bed shorter than five feet, and the Maverick's is 4.5'. But I don't care. This is a pickup for suburbia, not for a contractor. If you need to pick up a sheet of plywood, just put the tailgate down, affix a little red flag, and Bob's your uncle.
If a Maverick is going to be your only vehicle, and you're concerned with operating costs, I'd say go with the Hybrid. For me I'd prefer a straight gas engine and either the Lobo or Tremor version (no reason you can't have a little fun in your truck).
Now comes the tough part, the cost. The price of a 2025 Maverick XLT AWD Hybrid as of 9/12/2025 as per shop.ford.com is $35,255.
I'd opt for the Lobo but you should check out all the Maverick versions either online or at your Ford dealer.
