The NRA Gets It's Name On NASCAR Race

I have to wonder what NASCAR is thinking allowing the NRA to become the named sponsor of its Sprint Cup Race at Texas Motor Speedway (http://chronicle.augusta.com/sports/nascar/2013-03-04/nra-gets-name-nascar-race?v=1362435043). NASCAR viewership has declined and they are trying (once again) to appeal to a broader base. The introduction of race cars that look more like their street kin is one attempt.

So why hook arms with an organizatin as polarizing as the NRA? I'm sure NASCAR's traditional fan base includes many, many NRA members but if they really wanted to expand beyond the blue collar, white males they now attract maybe they should stay away from sponsors that people either love or hate.

Having the NRA as a named sponsor most likely won't sit well with a large segment of the rest of the country and with a national debate in progress of gun control it definitely looks like NASCAR is taking sides. Not exactly one of the smartest moves going in my opinion.
